Cape Cod LIFE Where the Land Ends... LIFE Begins ™ Thu, 10 Jul 2025 17:45:33 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.1 For the Love of Summer https://stg-capecodlifecom-staging.kinsta.cloud/for-the-love-of-summer/ Thu, 10 Jul 2025 16:59:07 +0000 https://stg-capecodlifecom-staging.kinsta.cloud/?p=317067 An Edgartown home provides respite and relaxation for a busy family.

The triumvirate team of Rosbeck Builders, Patrick Ahearn, Architect and Kate Coughlin Interiors succeeds at creating a timeless summer retreat.

On a tree-lined street in Edgartown’s historic district, there’s a home that feels as though it’s been nestled into the landscape for more than a century—an old soul with a timeless silhouette and a story to tell. And while that story is freshly written, every detail of the house suggests a deeper past. With cedar shingles weathered just enough to settle into their surroundings, crisp white trim, flourishing window boxes, and graceful symmetry, the home on South Summer Street blends so seamlessly with the neighborhood that even seasoned islanders pause to ask: “Was that always there?”

Imagined by architect Patrick Ahearn, MAIA; crafted by Peter Rosbeck from the Vineyard’s Rosbeck Builders, and brought to life by interior designer Kate Coughlin, this newly constructed home is the product of long-standing relationships, a shared design philosophy, and most importantly, a vision rooted in love—love of family, of summer, of tradition, and of Edgartown itself. It was created to be a gathering place, a summer compound, and a private village sanctuary. Today, it fulfills those goals and more, standing as both a personal retreat and an architectural love letter to the Vineyard.

The Dream of a Compound

This home didn’t begin as a single project. It began as part of a broader journey—one that involved not only a new house but a new way of living for a family devoted to their Edgartown summers. “We’ve worked with this client for many years,” Ahearn explains. “We did the owner’s parents’ house, her home in Wellesley, and the house next door to this one. So, when this property became available, it was a natural next step.”

The idea was simple, heartfelt, and uniquely Vineyard: two neighboring homes forming one extended family compound. The plan was for the client and her family to move into the newly renovated house, while still retaining the original home next door for additional family. The two backyards would be seamlessly connected—united by a shared pool terrace, lush landscaping, and a gate nestled into a privet hedge. “It was about being able to walk next door, spend time with the grandkids, and have this closeness and convenience right in the village,” Ahearn says.

The house embodies a physical representation of that dream—a home that offers privacy, togetherness, and layers of space for generations to gather. “We don’t know what the long-term plan will be as the generations evolve,” Ahearn says. “But it’s flexible. If they ever decide to sell the other house, the gate closes and the yard becomes private once again. But the spirit of a family compound lives on in the way the home was designed.”

Architecture with an Implied History

In the historic district of Edgartown, architectural harmony isn’t just encouraged—it’s expected. But Ahearn didn’t just adhere to the rules; he expanded on them, crafting a home that looks like it has evolved naturally over decades. “We call it an implied history,” he says. “It’s the idea that the home could have started as a little farmhouse on the left, then expanded with a carriage house, and connected later with an enclosed porch.”

To the passerby, the house appears to have been built in stages—perhaps by successive generations—a fiction so seamless that even those who know better must pause. “You really can’t tell what came first,” Ahearn says. “We created a visual narrative, a hierarchy of scale, where each element complements the others without feeling overly matched or forced.”

The left wing—what Ahearn affectionately calls “the original house”—was preserved in form but fully rebuilt. It was lifted and placed on a new foundation, then internally restructured to flow with the new floor plan. A slightly stepped-back connector leads to the more architecturally refined carriage house wing, where Greek Revival details subtly distinguish the space while maintaining overall cohesion.

The front door is centered between twin gables—a design choice that respects the historic vernacular while improving functionality. “That was a conversation with the Historic Commission,” Ahearn recalls. “They let us rework the entry so we could have one elegant front door rather than two separate ones. It’s small details like that that elevate the experience without breaking character.”

From the corner boards to the oversized eaves, each architectural detail reinforces the illusion of age and authenticity. Even the railings—a bit chunkier than usual—were designed to ground the home visually and lend it a sense of established permanence.

A Home that Smiles from the Inside

Where Ahearn built the bones, interior designer Kate Coughlin brought them to life with color, texture, and character. A close friend of the client, Coughlin had worked with her on previous projects and understood her tastes intimately. “She’s one of those dream clients,” Coughlin explains. “We have been able to establish a very effective working relationship on top of our personal friendship, so in the end it just becomes a wonderful adventure. She said, ‘I love pink and orange,’ and she just let me run with it.”

The result is a home that feels both joyful and sophisticated—playful without being precious. It starts the moment you walk through the front door, where a custom stair runner with thin stripes of coral and tangerine sets the tone. “It makes you smile,” Coughlin says. “It’s energetic, optimistic, and really personal. But the palette is used thoughtfully—not everywhere, but in moments that feel like little bursts of happiness.”

Throughout the home, soft grays, whites, and natural textures serve as a neutral backdrop for layered details. In the dining room, Benjamin Moore’s “Gray Owl” graces the walls above crisp wainscoting, while pagoda-print drapes nod to architectural motifs. A custom brass lantern from Urban Electric, painted with an orange interior, hangs above the table—a subtle echo of the entry’s joyful colors.

In the living room, symmetry reigns with a pair of sofas, twin window seats flanking the fireplace, and a curated blend of materials and shapes. A standout element is the peacock wicker chair tucked into a corner—a piece Coughlin found and reimagined with deliberately painted accents. “It’s sculptural, nostalgic, and unexpected,” she says. “That corner wasn’t an access point to the outside, but we wanted to draw people there, so they could enjoy what was going on outside from inside the home. That chair just makes the space.”

Bedrooms with Personality

Upstairs, the bedrooms tell their own stories, each reflecting a different facet of the family’s lifestyle. In the primary suite, a beautifully shaped bed from The Beautiful Bed Company balances turned wood elements with an upholstered headboard—offering a cozy yet airy feel in front of shuttered windows. Wallcoverings in soft gray patterns ground the space with subtle elegance.

In the twin guest room, asymmetrical windows inspired creative lighting. “We flanked the larger center window with lanterns, which allowed us to center the beds in a more flexible way,” Coughlin explains. “It also created a really striking elevation from the inside.” Light fixtures in antique finishes mirror the home’s exterior palette, helping the interior feel deeply connected to its architectural roots.

Other bedrooms play with soft blues, grasscloth wall textures, and handcrafted details. A Quadrille shade here, a Galbraith & Paul fabric there—each space is layered with quiet luxury and an approachable, lived-in warmth. “It doesn’t feel like a decorator came through and imposed a look,” Coughlin says. “It feels like the family grew into the space.”

Living Outside, All Season Long

Of course, a Vineyard summer home wouldn’t be complete without meaningful outdoor spaces—and this one delivers. A generous covered porch, wrapped in shingles and fitted with a wood-burning fireplace and built-in cabinetry offers a shaded spot to take in the activity outside. “It’s the perfect in-between space,” Ahearn says. “Protected but open. You come in from the beach, take your shower, and settle here with a cocktail while the kids keep swimming.”

Just beyond, the pool terrace features six chaises, “Five for the family, one for a friend,” as Coughlin jokes, and a cozy outdoor dining area near the grill. The landscaping, designed by Mike Donaroma’s team from Edgartown’s Donaroma’s Nursery, Landscaping + Floral Design, blends mature plantings, a herringbone brick path, and layered hedges to create a sense of complete seclusion. Window boxes and pedestaled planters burst forth with blooms in rich summer hues with playful movement provided by the breezes off the harbor beyond.

A separate pool cabana houses a guest suite with a kitchenette and full bath, making it ideal for visitors or older children. Inside, casual furnishings and playful touches (think Monopoly boards and rattan stools) give it a relaxed, clubhouse vibe. “It’s kids’ territory,” Coughlin says. “But it’s also a space that can flex as the family evolves.”

Built on Trust

The success of this project wasn’t just about good design—it was about trust. Ahearn’s decades-long relationship with the clients allowed for clear communication, creative freedom, and a shared commitment to excellence. The same went for builder Rosbeck and landscape designer Donaroma—trusted collaborators whose long history with the venerable architect executed every detail with precision.

For Coughlin, the emotional connection made all the difference. “This house was built for a family I adore,” she says. “We’ve laughed together, mourned together, and designed together. You feel that love in every room.”

A Love Letter to Summer

Today, the house on South Summer Street stands as more than just a home—it’s a symbol of what summer means when you slow down, settle in, and share it with people you love. It’s a place where the architecture tells a story, where the interiors reflect personality, and where every space—from porch to pantry—invites memory-making.

“It’s a house with no unfulfilling spaces,” Coughlin says. “Every corner has a purpose. Every room gets used.”

And perhaps that’s the truest measure of success—not just a beautiful house, but a beloved one. One that welcomes every season, honors every chapter, and holds summer in its heart all year long.

A passionate North Falmouth gardener shares her splendid Wild Harbor gardens with more than 90,000 fans world-wide.

Perhaps it is perfect that this home and garden oasis is located in a Cape Cod place called Wild Harbor. Nearly every day, Instagram images of Hydrangeas, Roses, Lilies, and just about every cottage garden flower you can envision stream like wild magic from Liz Whitcher’s serene harbor of a home. Followers from “all over the world” says Liz with surprised delight, respond with questions, praise, comments, and dreams, all seemingly inspired by the age-old charm of this Cape house and the garden wreathed in nature’s splendor.

At last count, Liz’s wildly popular Instagram page had over 90,000 followers. Not bad for a woman in her late 60s who admits she knows almost nothing about computers and their confounding technology. Her popular Instagram account, @gardenonthecape, glimmers with gorgeous shots and videos of Rose-festooned doorways, gardens bursting with blue Hydrangeas, bright yellow Lilies, feathery hot pink Astilbe, stately Foxglove, and scores more found in artfully designed garden rooms. A charming, picket-fenced front garden welcomes you in with perennial bedecked beds in every color and texture, encircled by boxwood and anchored by yew shrubs and shaped Arborvitae trees. The gardens move around the house to an enchanting backyard landscape where a rock garden and a shade garden surround a unique, semi-enclosed outdoor dining and living area, created out of an old boathouse called “The Brig,” that is much loved by Liz and her family.

For 40 years, Liz has worked to transform this one-acre lot on a quiet North Falmouth street, where her husband grew up, sailed Beetle cats, and hung out with his friends in The Brig, and a fully four-season wonderland. All year round, her Instagram followers emote their admiration and wonder over videos paired with gentle instrumental tunes, from holiday, evergreen-laden window boxes and doorways, to classic New England autumnal displays of pumpkins and fall perennials glimmering in planters, window boxes, and in chock-full perennial beds stuffed with seasonal spring and summer high performers. Every post’s comment section is filled with readers’ dreams, despairs, hopes and frustrations. Liz carefully and thoughtfully responds to many of her readers, sharing know-how and comfort, simply loving this world that arrives like magic on her doorstep every day.

“An unexpected highlight being on Instagram has been the relationships I’ve formed with gardeners across the globe,” says Liz. “There is my friend Constance, who lives on a farm in Illinois (@constancegardens); and Terie who has gorgeous woodland gardens in upstate New York (@my_woodlandwonders) and Siog, who has a lovely English garden in London (@imindagarden)—they are all part of my garden tribe.”

With straightforward advice and easily followed tried and true hints, Liz sends far and wide the beauty of her uniquely Cape Cod world, giving readers the tools to create successful landscapes without intimidating rules and demands, sharing visions of gardens packed in with flowers, trees, and shrubs of all colors and shapes. In one popular post with more than 5,000 likes called “Cottage Garden Rules,” she starts off by saying: “Rule #1: BREAK the rules! The call of a cottage garden is whimsical, relaxed and jam-packed with colorful flowers. This overcrowding of plants is a signature feature of a cottage garden…you do not need to worry about plant colors, or spacing. I plant every color imaginable: everything goes!”

To one follower from Sacramento who says that California temperatures can be tough on perennials, Liz explains that packing beds full of flowers considerably lessens the need for costly irrigation systems and helps the plants survive Mother Nature’s whims. “I have Instagram garden friends all around the world and I’ve really learned so much from them,” says Liz, who explains that her daughter taught her how to share her passion and knowledge on the social media platform. A long-time registered nurse with Cape Cod Healthcare who retired from a position in a local managed care facility during COVID, Liz says that she learned the ins and outs of gardening from taking classes, workshops, and lectures. She has also forged strong relationships with national and regional gardening suppliers, becoming an Instagram ambassador for both Coast of Maine Organics nursery products and Beacon Gardens of Osterville. “I’m so happy to promote both those companies, and in return I receive products like great organic soil and beautiful plants. What more can a girl ask for!” says Liz.

Digging in the dirt on a near daily basis is a labor of love for Liz, who admits that she is hard-pressed to choose whether she favors flowers, over foliage plants, or trees over shrubs.

“I have a lot of trees on my property. I love them all,” says Liz. “I have several ornamentals, Red Buds, Crab Apples—and I also have a spectacular Smoke Tree that’s 60 feet tall! My property also has a lot of Mighty Oaks, which are considered the number one most beneficial tree to have on your Cape property.”

Liz admits that it’s almost impossible for her to choose a favorite perennial. “I am a perennial gardener at heart with so many favorites like Gaura, Salvias, Astilbes and Alliums. And I love repeat-blooming Daylilies, and classic cottage garden flowers like Black-Eyed Susan, Primrose, Foxgloves, Holly Hocks, and then there are the climbing roses…”

The creation of garden rooms in addition to the flower beds has been a long-time passion of this resourceful, enthusiastic Cape Codder, who admits that only old age will stop her from facing each day with new plans for enhancing—and sharing—her ever-expanding garden world. “I love it that we have a series of garden rooms,” she shares. “I have tried to put some kind of comfortable seating area in each so that we can have morning coffee in the kitchen garden, iced tea in the afternoon in the woodland shade garden…” And then there’s the second life of The Brig guest house, which has been expanded out with a lovely, completely remodeled bedroom into two connecting bright and airy living and dining rooms described by many of Liz’s family members and friends as their favorite part of this unique coastal oasis.

Liz explains that helpful relatives with construction talents were crucial in the shaping of this special space which has become the center of her family’s spring, summer, and fall lives. “My mother-in-law called it The Brig because Bob would be out there as a teenager with all his hooligan friends,” says Liz with a laugh. “There was a shuffleboard court behind the original boathouse and we expanded it to make a platform with a pergola put up by my brother-in-law and nephew. My talented nephew, Emmett Breslin, is a skilled carpenter. I am fortunate to have him. He has really helped the space evolve over time. For instance, he added several glass door inserts last summer, which helps to create the cozy cottage garden vibe.”

In a popular post Liz explains to her followers that The Brig has truly become the heart of the garden. “It is a treasured space where our family gathers for celebrations, quiet moments, and everything in between,” Liz notes. “From wedding receptions and family memorials, to everyday coffee breaks, this space has provided us with a place to connect, reflect, and celebrate life’s moments, big and small.”

“We keep tweaking it every year,” she says, noting that the outdoor living getaway is also the family’s favorite spot for summer dinners, and even movie nights. The three rooms have a casual, seaside flair with comfortable overstuffed sofas in neutral tones brightened by wood trim painted in a pleasing slate blue. The entire space is brightened with colorful overflowing planters and antique finds, including a country table covered with a classic, red-checked cloth surrounded by comfortable captain’s chairs perfect for summer outdoor dining. And of course, everywhere you look there are flowers. “My vision is to have it covered with Climbing Hydrangeas,” she says noting she is fortunate to have a very supportive husband who helps bring to life all her garden dreams and schemes. “He isn’t a gardener—he’s a fly fisherman,” she adds.. “But luckily he is supportive of all my wild ideas!”

Making plans for her 70th birthday soon, Liz admits that perhaps it’s time to hang up her shovel and just take the time to smell her many glorious roses. “I know at my age, I probably should consider scaling my gardens back, but that’s not going to happen,” says this resourceful, hard-working, imaginative Cape Codder. “I’ve just started a new garden over by my stone wall. I have so many gardens inside me and I need to get them out!” For her family, friends, fellow Cape Codders, and more than 90,000 garden lovers all around the world, that’s very good news.

Susan Dewey, a former Cape Cod Life Publications editor, and current freelance writer, lives in Centerville where she enjoys gardening in numerous perennial beds, and in her favorite garden room: a year-round “hoop house” where organic vegetables flourish all year round.

]]>
Actress and producer Michelle Romano transforms her dreams to the screen with a new dramatic series filmed on Cape Cod.

Massachusetts native Michelle Romano always envisioned a career where she could fully embrace her passion for dramatic expression. From a young age, talent shows and pageants became the training ground for building the confidence and poise she didn’t naturally possess. As a young girl who didn’t fit the conventional mold of a Hollywood starlet, Romano often felt overlooked. “I was told I wasn’t pretty enough to be an actress and that I should ‘do something else,’” she recalls. And while that was painful, it also lit a fire in her. Instead of backing down, Romano chose to challenge the industry’s standards.

“I fought to prove them wrong—to show that beauty isn’t just defined by Hollywood’s shallow lens. It frustrated me to realize that I was being judged on something as superficial as my appearance—and that, because of how I looked, some believed I could never live out my dream.” Rather than accept that narrative, she let it fuel her. That frustration turned into fire—a deep determination to prove that talent, passion, and perseverance matter more than surface-level beauty.

“I committed myself to telling stories that mattered, to portraying real people with depth and complexity. In doing so, I discovered my purpose wasn’t just to chase my own dream—it was to pave the way for others like me who had been told they didn’t belong. I wanted to show them that they do—and that success isn’t defined by fitting a mold, but by breaking it.”

Today, Romano channels those hard-earned lessons into a mission bigger than herself. “My mission is to encourage anyone who shares a dream—to show them that with hard work, resilience, and self-belief, anything is possible.” Her journey hasn’t been easy. “Nothing was handed to me,” she says. “I had to work really hard to prove myself more than most. I had to just show up, put in the work, and figure it out on my own. I had to earn everything I have.” Those dreams she earned include several film and television roles over the past three decades.

Growing up in the 90s, Romano was drawn to dramatic, emotionally charged series such as Beverly Hills, 90210, and later found insipration in shows such as Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, and The OC—dramas that painted a fantastical vision of adolescence and young adulthood. A transformative trip to Chatham, however, would spark a new vision. It was during a summer visit that Romano was captivated by the unparalleled beauty of the Cape, immediately envisioning how a dramatic series could unfold in this idyllic setting.

Standing on the staircase at Chatham Bars Inn, gazing out over the water, she recalls, “I could immediately picture the characters, the drama—woven with fashion, scandal, and the influence of high society. It was clear to me that this town had the perfect backdrop for a series I wanted to create, and from that moment, I had the premise in my mind for a dramatic show set right here in Chatham.”

That was in 2019, and like most worthwhile endeavors, it took time to fully evolve. Romano enlisted screenwriter Amber Karlins, whose work she had long admired, to help bring her vision to life. Together, they created three seasons of high-stakes drama, romance and cliff-hangers. The series is aimed at both young adults and older viewers—much like the shows Romano loved as a teen.

This past year, Romano’s dream began to take shape as she commenced filming Season 1 on Cape Cod. Romano, who stars in the series and serves as its co-creator and producer, is independently producing the project through her company, Roman Media Productions. This venture has been a true labor of love—one that relies as much on creativity as community support. “We had to be resourceful,” she explains. “I posted on social media and reached out to local Chambers of Commerce and businesses. The response was amazing! We received an overwhelming amount of support—from homeowners to small businesses and private venues.”

Episode 2 brings the entire cast together for a lavish party filmed on location at Wequassett Resort and Golf Club in Harwich. The vision for the showwas realized not only through creative drive, but with the invaluable support of a dedicated team. “We couldn’t have pulled this off without such an exquisite location and an incredible events team behind us,” Romano says. “Every detail was meticulously crafted, from the decor to the overall event design, thanks to the talented teams at Babes in Business Boston & Champagne and Confetti. Their collaborative effort helped bring the world to life, adding layers of authenticity and elegance to the production. It is this attention to detail that made the series feel not only like a passion project, but a labor of love shared by many.”

Romano flew most of the cast members in for a party scene—many of whom are West Coast regulars in a wide variety of film, television and stage roles—and along with the help of local hospitality partners like The Platinum Pebble Boutique Inn and Inn on the Beach, both in Harwich, housed them for the multiple days of shooting. Without revealing too much of the plot or the noteworthy actors, Romano explains the premise of the party scene. “The event is thrown by the most prominent family in Chatham,” she says. “It’s an extravagant event for both the younger and older characters, filled with social intrigue and scandal. The party serves as a pivotal moment in the series, setting the stage for deepening personal conflicts and unexpected alliances.”

As the characters mix and mingle in a high-society atmosphere, secrets begin to unravel. Romano teases that the tension between the generational divide only adds more layers to the drama—making the party both a spectacle and a battleground for power, love, and betrayal. “What makes this event so captivating,” she says, “is not just the lavish setting, but how it mirrors the complex dynamics of our characters’ lives.”

For cast as well as crew, it was a collaborative effort to bring in the right team for this project. Romano hand-picked individuals from a lifetime of creative collaborations. “It became a running joke that planning all the details for this shoot was like planning a wedding,” she says. “Everyone who worked on this project is someone I love and value. It means the world that they showed up for me.” One longtime friend told Romano during filming, “I hope you take a moment to just take all this in. Be in the moment, this is the realization of your dream.”

Over the years, Romano and Karlins (co-creators/producers) faced numerous suggestions to either sell the series entirely or scale it back to a more manageable production. But both were determined not to compromise on the scale and vision they had worked so hard to create. It wasn’t an easy choice. With every obstacle, there was a moment of doubt, but Romano’s resolve only strengthened. By staying true to the dream, Romano and Karlins not only protected the integrity of the project, but they also created something bigger than either could have imagined. “I am so proud of what we accomplished,” Romano says. “It’s not just about the series anymore—it’s about proving that if you believe in something enough, and are willing to put in the work, nothing can stand in your way.”

The production also benefited from the undeniable charm of Cape Cod, with local spots becoming an essential character in the series itself. From private homes to iconic landmarks, the natural beauty of the Cape served as the perfect backdrop for the drama that unfolded on screen, ensuring the production was authentic and seamlessly integrated into its environment.

The series has already garnered attention for its dynamic storytelling and lavish production values. With episodes filmed both on location and in Los Angeles sound stages, the blend of real-world and cinematic backdrops creates a visually rich and unique viewing experience. Romano credits the talented crew, including Emmy-winning director Sonia Blangiardo, cinematographers Will Greenberg from Los Angeles, and Massachusetts local Robert Berson, who shot the second unit’s footage, for bringing the series’ visual elements to life.

As the project continues to develop, Romano is looking ahead with the anticipation building among fans and investors alike. “I’ve been so amazed by the response,” she says. “There is a genuine excitement about the show, not just because of the story, but because it’s something people can connect with—especially those who are familiar with the Cape Cod lifestyle.”

The project, still under wraps, is already generating buzz for its stylish, grounded performances, and unapogetically bold storytelling. Cape Codders near and far will soon be able to enjoy their next binge-worthy program filmed in a very familiar place.

Blueberry Muffin

Cedarville & The PinehillsPlymouth | Kingston, Pembroke | bluebmuffin.com

After years working as director of operations at Dunkin’ Donuts, perfecting his passion for breakfast and hospitality, Kevin Brown and his wife Rosemarie took a leap of faith and opened a family-friendly breakfast restaurant. That was in 1998, and they’ve since opened three more locations and become as important to the communities they serve as a cup of coffee in the morning. “As a family-owned restaurant, we focus on quality, comfort and connection. And we believe in the goodness of homemade. Everything from our muffins—baked fresh daily—to our evolving specials is made with care,” Brown shares. Unique selections that customers love include a Breakfast BLT and a Street Corn Avocado Toast finished with a drizzle of chipotle aioli. But don’t forget the classics like the Lumberjack combo: a hearty plate of eggs, meat, toast, homefries and oversized pancakes or French toast. From inventive coffee blends to exciting weekend specials, Blueberry Muffin is passionate about making every guest feel at home.

Their chef has over 40 years of experience and offers popular dishes like the meatloaf and eggs or homemade Portuguese hash. They also have several gluten-free options like French toast and pancakes. Pettey is proud of her staff that has quickly grown to feel like family and shares, “We work hard to put out great food accompanied by great service in a fun and friendly spot!” Bourne Breakfast Club is conveniently located just a few miles from the Bourne Bridge. The brothers’ combined experience in the restaurant industry shines through in their hospitality and in the flavorful menu they have created.
